Originally named Hingne Stree Shikshan Samstha, it began as a “Home for Widows” and a school for widows, reflecting Karve’s deep commitment to women's empowerment through education.
The institution was later renamed Maharshi Karve Stree Shikshan Samstha to honor his legacy.
MKSSS has grown into a vast educational network offering programs from pre-primary to professional education, serving over 32,000 students annually.
He believed that “Women’s Education & National Development are complementary to each other”.
His mission was to uplift, emancipate, and educate destitute and downtrodden women, making them self-reliant and confident members of society.
MKSSS continues to thrive as a beacon of women's education in India, carrying forward Karve’s century-old legacy.
